Initial Client Meeting
The key objective of the first visit is to overview the project and ensure a client: designer fit. To get there, we bring our portfolio of completed works as a means of introducing our design philosophy and process and will overview the project by looking to understand the scope of works, desired aesthetics, vision, and timeline.
After this meeting, we determine our level of involvement and develop a proposal for moving forward.
The Survey
For larger-scale projects, getting a clear understanding of the site is vital to each project. In those instances, a professional topographical survey is required. Often the client is already in possession of this survey. If not, Studio Jacobs can assist in obtaining it.
Before we start the design process, we will re-visit the site, creating an inventory of existing vegetation, vistas, and other relevant elements.
Sketch Proposal
An exciting stage in the process, upon taking the time to study the site, we present our client with our vision for the project. Generally, this includes a series of hand-drawn master plans outlining our approach which are accompanied by a presentation that shows proposed planting palettes, materials, and precedent images that help bring the proposed look and feel of the garden to life.
Detailed Design & Bidding
Once we have settled on the vision for the garden, we begin producing the detailed CAD drawings and specifications required to price and execute the scope of works.
This stage typically includes detailed drawings for all built elements within the garden, detailed planting plans, and the selection of hardscape materials. If needed, we can also assist in finding the right contractor based on the level of expertise required to execute the site-specific work.
Using the detailed drawings to get prices from contractors we evaluate contracts and, if necessary, can perform value engineering to mediate between the client and contractor – reading and reviewing the agreements made to ensure all parties are aligned.
Construction Management
When construction begins we ensure everything is being built following our drawings - adapting, assisting, and supporting the team on-site where necessary.
Visiting the site 2-3 times a week, we communicate frequently with contractors, clients, and the wider design team, review materials, and go out in search of the perfect specimen trees and shrubs – traveling the country to do so if needed.
Once plants arrive on-site, we physically lay each one out to ensure the planting is in line with the design and quality we strive for.
Delivery
When the project is completed we provide a planting maintenance proposal to ensure a healthy establishment of the garden. After delivery, we enjoy visiting once or twice a year to see how the garden is growing and to make any recommendations so the garden continues to thrive.
